In 1934, one of the most famous art thefts in history shocked Belgium and the art world. A panel of the Ghent Altarpiece (also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Jan and Hubert Van Eyck) disappeared: The Just Judges.

Since that day, the question has remained unanswered: Where are the Just Judges?

The theft was followed by an extraordinary investigation, filled with intrigue, false leads, and unanswered questions. Arsène Goedertier, a former church sacristan and Banker, confessed on his deathbed that he alone knew the location of the missing masterpiece. But no one has ever found it.

The Just Judges panel is sometimes called the missing piece of the Ghent Altarpiece, les Juges Intègres, die Gerechten Richter, los Jueces Justos or i Giudici Giusti. Art lovers, historians, and detectives worldwide have searched tirelessly for the stolen painting.

The mystery is part of Belgian history, but also of world heritage. The Ghent Altarpiece is one of the most important works of early Renaissance art. Its missing panel represents not only a financial loss but a deep cultural wound.

Even today, in 2025, new theories continue to emerge. Was the panel hidden in Ghent Cathedral? Was it destroyed, or is it still waiting to be rediscovered?

The fascination remains alive:
